From Burnout to Breakthrough: Real Stories from Our Participants

📈 Real Impact, Real Stories

The "Empowering Minds" project was a Swedish-Belgian Erasmus+ partnership between Youngcubator (SE) and vzw Edushakers (BE). Our goal was to fill a major "gap in the incubator scene": the lack of tools for personal development and mental health care.

We set out to help entrepreneurs (ages 25-40) build sustainable careers, not just successful businesses. We wanted to prove that an entrepreneur's mental well-being isn't a luxury—"it's the foundation for any long-term, sustainable idea."

Here are the reflections on the journey, showing the impact on participants who went from feeling "stuck" to building sustainable, "conscious" careers.

🇧🇪 Case Study 1: From Burnout to Conscious Entrepreneurship

Participant B - Belgium Cohort

The Challenge

A 29-year-old entrepreneur in Leuven was struggling with "work-related FOMO" and anxiety, feeling that personal well-being was a "luxury they couldn't afford".

"I felt like if I wasn't working 24/7, my business would fail. There was no space for me to disconnect or take care of myself."

During the initial virtual launch brainstorming session, they expressed an inability to disconnect, leading to a discrepancy between their passion for their work and their actual, unsustainable work habits.

The Process

After completing the EM course, particularly these modules:

  • Mastering Your Mindset (Chapter 2)
  • Time Management (Chapter 5)
  • Visualization techniques

The participant developed a new approach:

  1. Implemented a "hard stop" to their workday
  2. Used visualization techniques to manage anxiety
  3. Reframed their business model to be "passion-led, not just profit-driven"
  4. Identified and cut two "low-value, high-stress" product lines

Project Objectives Achieved

Objective 1: Mental Well-being Objective 2: Conscious Learning
✅ The Outcome

The participant reported feeling more productive in fewer hours and had started a preliminary collaboration with a Swedish participant to explore "conscious" market-entry strategies in Scandinavia.

They developed a sustainable work plan that balanced productivity with personal well-being, proving that entrepreneurs can thrive without burnout.

🇸🇪 Case Study 2: From "Stuck" to Sustainable

Participant S - Sweden Cohort

The Challenge

A 32-year-old from Halmstad joined the program with a strong social-enterprise idea but was "stuck in the development process".

"I had a great idea and passion, but I couldn't figure out how to make it financially viable. The stress was overwhelming."

Their initial challenge was a significant gap in "financial literacy" and a lack of a "conscious entrepreneurial learning" approach, leading to high stress about profitability and an inability to create a model that could "sustain themselves in the long run."

The Process

The participant engaged deeply with:

  • Financial Literacy (Chapter 9) - provided the concrete tools they were missing
  • Mentoring sessions for personalized guidance
  • Cross-national collaboration opportunities

Key breakthroughs:

  1. Learned to build a sustainable business model with proper financial planning
  2. Moved from a "profit-exclusive" mindset to one of "conscious" sustainability
  3. Financial clarity directly reduced their anxiety

Project Objectives Achieved

Objective 1: Mental Well-being Objective 3: Employability
✅ The Outcome

At the final matchmaking session, Participant S pitched their newly refined, financially sound business plan.

They created a potential new Swedish-Belgian collaboration by partnering with a Belgian participant who had expertise in EU market access—a direct result of the project's cross-national design. Their social enterprise idea is now sustainable and ready for launch.

🇧🇪 Case Study 3: From "Ambition" to Action

Participant A - Belgium Cohort

The Challenge

A 35-year-old from the Belgian cohort had the "ambition of joining" an incubator but was "stuck" and lacked confidence.

"I had the idea and the passion, but something was holding me back. I didn't feel ready to take the leap."

During the initial virtual launch, they expressed feelings of being stuck in the development process and a lack of confidence, which was hindering them from formally applying to an incubator program despite having a strong, passion-driven idea.

The Process

The participant found particular value in:

  • Mastering Your Mindset (Chapter 2)
  • Setting Goals (Chapter 4)
  • Final Reflection and Action Plan (Chapter 12)
  • Dedicated mentoring sessions

These modules helped them:

  1. Build a clear, conscious plan
  2. Overcome specific hurdles through personal guidance
  3. Gain the confidence to take action

Project Objectives Achieved

Objective 1: Mental Well-being Objective 2: Conscious Learning Objective 3: Employability
✅ The Outcome

Participant A successfully applied to and was accepted by Edushakers' own incubator, Campus Corso.

Using their "Final Reflection and Action Plan," they transformed their ambition into concrete action. This represents a perfect, tangible outcome of the project's goals—helping entrepreneurs move from feeling stuck to achieving their professional aspirations.

Authors: Project Teams at Youngcubator (SE) and vzw Edushakers (BE)

A "how-to" guide for other incubators, adult education providers, and associations. Based on our findings, here are actionable ways to implement our model:

  1. Start with "Personal Development," Not Just Business - Address the person first to build a foundation of resilience
